The Utah State Board of Education approved a delay in the distribution of $20 million in funds that Utah Legislature designated for a one-time, performance-based compensation for educators.
The rule governing the distribution of funds required that the Utah State Office of Education is to distribute funds to districts and charters by Dec. 1, 2008. The schools then, would not pay out to educators until the end of the school year. Now, the funds will remain at the state office until further action is taken by the board or by the Utah Legislature.
To be eligible for these merit-based compensations, schools had to propose an ideal to go above and beyond their regular work, and have it approved by the USOE. Park City High School was among the schools approved.
Educators at PCHS, once obliging to the conditions of the program, were promised a compensation for their extra work throughout the year. There is a chance now, however, that the extra work the teachers have been doing so far this year will not be rewarded with the compensation they deserve.
