Grantsville- The Park City boys tennis team faced their second match of the season this Wednesday in Grantsville, a fellow 3A school. Losing some of their top varsity players due to High School Jazz Band regional competition, the miners were expecting a tough match.
Park City faced consistent opponents that would make them fight to win every point. Every match was close, with each player doing all they could in the hopes of coming out on top.
In place of number one singles player Sam Miller, Kasra Motaghed took the number one spot. He played to the best of his abilities, but unfortunately, was unable to hold out till the end and lost in two sets, 5-7, 2-6.
Second singles player Jack Burrus was one of the few to win his match, but only after a long fight. He succeeded in three sets. End score, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
In the third singles position, John Packham also provided the team with a win, but only after many screams and self-correction. His final score was a straight set win, 6-4, 6-1.
By the end of the day, Varsity doubles were the last of the team to finish their matches. They both faced three set battles lasting nearly three hours long.
Number one doubles team, Brett Baggett and Jackson Engen lost in an upset match with a too-close-for-comfort match including two tiebreakers. In the end, they fell short of a win. Final score was 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.
Number two doubles team, Caleb Wray and Alex Quitiquit faced a very similar match. They were the last varsity match still playing of the day. They suffered a three set loss, with a final score-6-4, 6-7, 3-6.
Junior varsity ended up with wins in many positions.
Number one JV singles player, Tyler Carpenter, won 8-2.
Noah Rusk lost 0-8 in 2nd JV singles, while Steven Roth also lost, 0-8.
Number one JV doubles players Sam McMahon and Matt Tychson won 8-0, and number two doubles Jake Nelson and Griffin Thomas pulled off another win 8-0.
The last match of the day, third JV doubles players, Evan Fleming and Joe Sisk, ended with a victorious battle. After making it to a tie-break in the pro-set, they pulled off a win that was extremely close, 8-7(7-5 in the tie-break!).
