If you want something to motivate you and give you a new outlook on life, the Secret Life of Bees is the film for you. With its all-star cast featuring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys, the concepts of sexism and racism are sympathetically addressed in this film.
Set in 1964 South Carolina, Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning) is a fourteen year-old girl living with her abusive father and the haunting memories of her late mother. Her black caretaker, Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson) offers the only support and love Lily has known in her life, and it is with this woman that Lily runs away from her town.
Searching for the small town her mother once visited, Lily brings Rosaleen all the way to the home of a black woman who makes honey with the picture of a Black Madonna.
Through the passion of the sisters who own the house, Lily and Rosaleen learn what it is like to be loved and cared for. The rest of the story is for you to discover, and I truly recommend it for anyone who needs a little uplift or just a good film to watch. With great cinematography and an accurate adaptation of the story, The Secret Life of Bees embodies the struggles of life in the '60s and what family really means.
